Anne Wilson Leans On “Sunday Sermons”

Growing up in church, Anne Wilson didn’t realize that all of those weekly Bible stories were imprinting themselves on her heart. Years later, she’s thankful for every one of those “Sunday Sermons” in her new single, the follow-up to Wilson’s chart-topping smash, “My Jesus.”

The autobiographical “Sunday Sermons” takes listeners back to old church pews and hymn-singing choirs as the Kentucky native relays all the instances she’s sought hope, counsel and comfort in the sermons of her childhood—messages she thought she’d long forgotten.

"Every one of those Sunday sermons Every time that choir would sing I could hear my Savior calling, telling me how much He loves me" - lyrics from “Sunday Sermons”

“I’m so excited to share ‘Sunday Sermons’ with the world,” she enthuses. “This is my story of growing up in the church since I was a little girl. God used every Sunday sermon to develop a firm foundation in Him. I didn’t realize just how deep my roots were in Him from all those years of showing up to church each Sunday until I encountered hardships in my life. No matter what happens in life—even losing a loved one—I can always go back to that foundation of truth that the Lord planted in me through each of those sermons. This song is to remind you to cling to the One who’s consistent and faithful. Jesus loves you more than you could ever imagine.”

The “faith-shaking hard times” Wilson references in the lyrics of the pop-centric song are an obvious nod to the tragic loss of her older brother, who passed away at the age of 23 as a result of a car accident. Wilson—who had spent a lifetime dreaming of working for NASA—performed a worship song in front of an audience for the first time at her brother’s funeral, inadvertently stumbling upon her life’s calling, which led her to change course and pursue music professionally.

All of those Sunday sermons have undoubtedly given her a strong theological foundation from which to build an incredible catalog of impactful songs that both speak truth and resonate with real life. Wilson, who recently made her Grand Ole Opry debut, will share her country-tinged pop with listeners live this spring on “The Brand New Tour” with Matthew West and friends, followed by a 35-city trek supporting Zach Williams
