"Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls." – 1 Peter 2:25 NLT
In 2005, a sheep named Shrek became famous for avoiding his shepherd for six years. Found hiding in a cave, Shrek had grown an incredible 60 pounds of wool, enough to make 20 suits. Without a shepherd to guide and care for him, Shrek's wool became a burden, hindering him from thriving. Once reunited with his shepherd, Shrek’s heavy fleece was removed, freeing him from the weight he could no longer manage.
Like Shrek, we are prone to wander. Without Jesus, the Good Shepherd, we carry the burdens of life (guilt, fear, shame and uncertainty) on our own. We try to navigate life’s challenges in our strength, but the load becomes overwhelming. Yet, 1 Peter 2:25 reminds us that when we turn to Jesus, He not only removes our burdens but becomes the Guardian of our souls.
As the Guardian, Jesus doesn’t simply rescue us from wandering. He protects, nurtures, and leads us into a life of peace and purpose. Just as a shepherd knows each sheep by name and tends to their every need, Jesus knows you intimately and cares for every aspect of your life. His care extends far beyond physical needs; He restores your soul and gives you eternal security in Him.
It’s not always easy to surrender to the Shepherd’s guidance, but it’s the only way to experience the freedom and fullness of His care. Jesus said in John 10:14, “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me.” Today, you have the opportunity to rest in His love and follow His voice, knowing He will never lead you astray.
