8 Powerful Prayers for Assurance of Salvation

Have you ever asked the question, “How do I know if I’m really saved?” Or how about, “Has God really forgiven me for everything I’ve done?”  Believe it or not, these are quite common questions for many believers in Christ. If you are having these kinds of thoughts, know that you aren’t alone. However, God’s Word is clear on how someone can know they are saved. Salvation is a gift freely given by God out of His great love for us. It is not something that we earn or deserve. The Bible describes God’s love for us as abundant, unfailing, and unconditional. It is His desire that all people be saved. If you or someone you know is struggling with constantly doubting their salvation, we have included some resources at the bottom of the page that may be helpful in addition to the following Scriptures and 8 prayers.

1. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. – 1 John 1:9 NLT

Dear Lord, I confess that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. Forgive me of all my sins and make me a new creation in You. Thank You for Your faithfulness to me and Your willingness to forgive me for everything I’ve done wrong. I receive Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9 NLT

Heavenly Father, I confess that Jesus is Lord. I believe Jesus suffered and died on the cross for me and was raised to life again by Your power. Thank You for saving me from my sin and promising me an eternal home in heaven with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

3. But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. – Romans 5:8 NLT

Dear Lord, I am amazed by Your grace. Your Word tells me that Jesus died for me while I was still a sinner. Help me to understand just how much You love and care for me. I pray that Your love will give me the strength and confidence I need to live a life completely devoted to You. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

4. God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. – Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT

Lord God, I believe in You. I know I don’t deserve Your grace, but I choose to receive it because it is a free gift that You have given to me. Help me Lord to never boast about myself or the good things I have done, but instead to give all honor, praise, and glory to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

5. He does not punish us for all our sins; He does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. – Psalm 103:10 NLT

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your great mercy! You are full of grace. I recognize Your goodness, and I know that Your character is perfect. Help me trust in the fact that You are God and You are always good. Even when I fall into sin, You offer me mercy and grace every time. Thank You, Jesus. amen.

6. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:39 NLT

Dear Lord, help me to understand just how much You love me. Your Word tells me that nothing in all creation can separate me from Your love. What a comforting promise to have! I pray that every day I will live in the security of knowing that I am dearly loved by my Heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name, amen.

7. The Lord isn’t really being slow about His promise, as some people think. No, He is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. – 2 Peter 3:9 NLT

Heavenly Father, it is Your desire that everyone comes to know You as Lord and Savior. Help me to share the truth of Your love with those around me. Give me the boldness to share my faith. Thank You for always being patient with me and with those who don’t know You yet. I know that You are a good God. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

8. The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. – Psalm 145:8 NLT

Lord God, there is no one like You. You are perfect in all of Your ways. Thank You for Your unfailing love for me. When I make a mistake, help me to always run back to You and ask for Your forgiveness. Help me to trust in Your great compassion and love for me. I want to love and serve You always. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

If you continually struggle with thoughts of losing your salvation or blaspheming God, you may be experiencing symptoms of scrupulosity, also known as Religious OCD. Scrupulosity is a psychological disorder characterized by constant guilt or obsession with moral or spiritual issues. These symptoms can be highly distressing but have no influence on whether you are truly saved and forgiven by God. If you think you may be dealing with symptoms of scrupulosity or have continuous, blasphemous thoughts, we encourage you to take one or both quizzes below to help you better understand the effects of Religious OCD.
