Danny Gokey's new jam keeps the most important thing, the most important thing. "Gotta keep it real simple, bring everything back to ground zero," he sings, after fully admitting that he tends to overcomplicate and overthink things as much as the next person. Then, in a vibrant chorus, he reminds us that the Christian life revolves around two basic tenants: Love God. Love people. That's it.
The father of four takes his cues from Luke 10:27 (NLT), which says, "The man answered, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
With an assist from Michael W. Smith on piano, "Love God Love People" is Gokey's latest single from his most recent studio album, Haven't Seen It Yet. Putting legs to his lyrics, throughout the month of June, the singer and his wife, Leyicet, encouraged fans to take part in a 30-day challenge to use their words to build others up and live out the lyrics of his new song.
"We've been taught that since we were little kids, but do we really put it into practice as adults?" Danny asks of the message behind the fresh track. "Loving someone like you value yourself isn't always easy in our self-preservation culture, but when we experience the love God has for us, we can't help but allow it to spill out to others. We were created for relationship with Him and with others; that's where true life can be found. It's really that simple. Love is what it's all about!"
Gokey has been using his own words to speak life through his ongoing "Coffee + Songs" Facebook Live series where he chats with various artists and celebrities over a cup of warm brew and stripped-down, acoustic performances.
