Searching to Know God

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. - Romans 12:2

Have you ever struggled with making a decision? Have you had a hard time deciding what direction to head in? Ever wrestle with, “How can I know God’s will for my life?” It is a question that many of us at one time or another have been faced with.

Whether you are just starting out in your journey with your walk with the Lord or you have been serving Him for years.  We find ourselves searching for the answer to what God would have us do in certain situations.

In today’s verse, The Apostle Paul give us two steps that we can take to find the Will of God for our lives.

Step 1. Paul encourages us to not “copy the behavior and customs of this world.”

Think about this with me. What are the behaviors and customs of this world? In a lot of ways, we are surrounded by this idea of, “If it feels good, do it!” We are constantly bombarded with things that are contrary to the word of God. Paul here, is encouraging us not to allow the worlds’ customs and behaviors to have an influence on the way we think or act.

Step 2: Paul says, “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

Did you catch that? “Let God transform you.” Paul is saying the choice is yours. The choice is mine. It’s a decision of the will to step back and say, “God, I surrender control. I need your help.”

How can we do this? I would submit to you, simply by allowing God to change the way we think. Now, the only way I know how to allow God to change the way we think is by

  • Getting in His Word.
  • Praying.
  • Surrounding ourselves with other followers of Christ.

One sure way of doing this is by plugging into to a local church. Simply put, as we make an effort to allow more of God into our lives, Paul says then, “you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Digging Deeper

  1. In what ways do you tend to conform to the world? What are some of the world’s major influences on your life today?
  2. What does Paul say is the result of allowing God to “renew your mind”?
  3. In what current situation do you need to know God’s will? What can you do to find it?
