“Your love for one another will prove to the world
that you are My disciples.” – John 13:35 (NLT)
In 165 A.D. a plague spread throughout the Roman empire, killing up to one third of the population. A little less than a century later, in 250 A.D., the Cyprian Plague hit Rome. It was believed that at its peak, almost 5,000 people a day died from the disease.
During the Antonine Plague, Christians stepped in to serve those in need at great risk to themselves. When the Cyprian Plague hit Rome most of the population fled to distance themselves from the disease. Christians remained and risked their lives in faith to care for those in distress.
Instead of fear and despondency, the earliest Christians would stay and tend to the sick and dying, knowing full well that it would likely result in their own deaths. They showed works of unreasonable, sacrificial mercy that simply astounded their unsaved neighbors. In Rome, the Christians buried the dead and supplied food for thousands of people daily. What would cause someone to make such a sacrifice?
The answer is found in John 13:35. The disciples of Jesus were following the example of Jesus who willingly laid down His life as a ransom for many. When God is willing to die for you, it makes you willing to die for Him and for others. How do people know you are a Christian?
The Church has long been faced with the decision that we Christians face now: How do we love God and love our neighbor no matter the place, time and circumstance?
“The disciples of Jesus were following the example of Jesus who willingly laid down His life as a ransom for many.”
Tip of the Day
Today, intentionally demonstrate Christ-like love by performing an act of selfless service for someone in need, embodying the sacrificial love that Jesus showed. Whether it's helping a neighbor, comforting a friend, or volunteering in your community, let your actions speak louder than words, proving to the world that you are a disciple of Jesus.
Prayer
Dear Lord, please grant me the strength to love others as Jesus loved—selflessly and sacrificially. Help me embody the spirit of John 13:35, displaying my discipleship through acts of compassion and mercy. May my life reflect the profound love You have shown me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Pause and Reflect
Reflect on the historical examples of Christians during plagues. How can you demonstrate Christ-like love in challenging circumstances, and what sacrifices are you willing to make for the well-being of others in your community?
Considering the highlighted quote, "The disciples of Jesus were following the example of Jesus who willingly laid down His life as a ransom for many," how does your life reflect the sacrificial love of Jesus? What steps can you take to align your actions more closely with His example?
Read Luke 10:25-37. How does this passage show the cost of love and how can you follow this example specifically?
