8 Prayers for Overcoming Regret

Have you ever done something in your life you wish you hadn’t? Most of us, at one time or another, have regretted doing something in our lives. Whether it’s something we’ve said or done in the past, it’s easy to hold on to things we’ve done wrong. It’s challenging to stop looking back on our mistakes, but that’s where Jesus comes in and shows us love and grace that’s unimaginable. We hope these 8 prayers will encourage and equip you in overcoming your battle with regret.

1. For His unfailing love toward those who fear Him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. 12 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. – Psalm 103:11-12 NLT

Lord, thank You for Your unfailing love toward me. I admit it’s difficult to forgive myself and I feel ashamed over the past. Help me to remember that You’ve lifted the burden of shame off my shoulders and cast my sin far away. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. – 1 John 1:9 NLT

Father, You are faithful in all circumstances. I’m so grateful for the grace You extend to me each day. No matter how regretful I’m feeling about my past, help me to remember You have forgiven me and You’ve cleansed me from all my sin. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. – 2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT

Heavenly Father, I feel sorrowful for what I’ve said and done in the past and I carry this heavy regret because of my actions. I know this sorrow I feel is evidence of the Holy Spirit in my life, but I know You are a God filled with grace and love to help me turn from my sin. May I always seek to be right in my relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you His peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all. – 2 Thessalonians 3:16 NLT

God, when I’m regretting things I’ve done, I feel anxious. I admit it’s challenging for me to let go of what I’ve done. In all situations, You give me peace because You are the God of peace. May I remember this truth always, even when I’m overwhelmed with regret and shame. In Jesus’ name, amen.

5. Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you. – 1 Peter 5:7 NLT

Lord God, I’m so grateful You care about me. I don’t want to carry this burden of regret anymoret, so please help me to remember You are always there to take this burden off me. May I give all my worries and cares to You because You love me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

6. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. – 1 John 1:7 NLT

Lord, thank You for the gift of Jesus. I know no matter what I’ve done, His blood cleanses me and I’m forever changed. Help me to seek God in all circumstances and cling to the hope I have in Him even when I’m overwhelmed with feelings of regret. In Jesus’ name, amen.

7. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23 NLT

God, You know what I’ve done and You still love me. I’m so grateful for the gift You’ve given me through Jesus. When I’m feeling sorrowful over my past, help me to remember I’ve accepted this gift and You are my God in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name, amen.

8. For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. – Hebrews 10:10 NLT

Lord, I’m so grateful You sent Jesus to be the ultimate sacrifice for my sin. I can hardly comprehend the grace and love You extend to me, but I’m so thankful for this gift. I often feel remorse over my past, but I know Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross has covered all my sin and I’m forgiven. I pray all these things in Jesus’ name, amen.
