“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NLT)

You've probably heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is one of the most iconic structures in the world, primarily because it leans. (Which, in case you were wondering, was NOT planned).

Construction of the tower began in 1173. It didn't take workers long to notice problems with the tower. Over the next 199 years, various teams attempted to compensate for the lean by inserting columns or beams, but nothing seemed to help, and nobody could figure out why.

In 2001 researchers finally discovered the problem. It turns out the sandy soil in the city of Pisa was just not stable enough to support a tower of that scope. The tower didn't have a firm foundation.*

Jesus talks about the importance of having a firm foundation in Matthew 7:24-27:

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

If you want to build a firm foundation for your family, you need to root yourself in God's Word. It's not enough to hear God's Word on Sunday; you have to work His words into your every day (James 1:22-25).

If you want to build a spiritually healthy family, make God part of every day, not just Sunday.

What does that look like on a practical level? It means joyfully living out your faith in front of your kids. It means getting plugged into a good church and going consistently, even if it means saying no to other things. It means spending time discussing what God's doing in your life and praying together. It means finding ways to serve others together and making family time a priority.

Don't settle for a sandy foundation. Make your Heavenly Father part of every day, not just Sunday, so you will have a foundation capable of withstanding any storm that comes your way.

Digging Deeper:

  1. Why is it essential for you to have a firm foundation?
  2. Describe a time when you felt your family was spiritually strong. What do you think contributed to that?
  3. What would it look like if you and your family had a deeper relationship with Jesus? What is one step you can take this week to help your family strengthen their faith?
