For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:28 (NLT)
A few years ago a lady called the church where I was serving. Her friend Diane was in the hospital following a heart attack. She asked if I would visit Diane that afternoon.
I paused for what felt like a day. I had a lot on my to-do list. I knew her request was urgent, but I felt like I didn't have time to help. Maybe you can relate.
I was about to say I couldn't see Diane today but would drop by the hospital first thing in the morning when I sensed the Holy Spirit nudging me to drop what I was doing and visit Diane. I resisted at first but decided to go.
When I got to Diane's room, I was intent on spending only a few minutes with her and leaving as soon as possible. As we got to talking, I felt another tug of the Holy Spirit to ask more about what was going on in her life.
I listened as Diane poured out her heart, humbled she would open up to me. Forgetting my to-do list, I was able to speak hope and encouragement into Diane's life. After we prayed, Diane said, “It means so much to me that you would take time out of your busy day to visit me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kindness. Thank you for being here for me.”
As I drove out of the parking lot that afternoon, I was thankful I had followed the Holy Spirit's leading.
The next morning Diane's friend called to share Diane had passed away a few hours after my visit. I can only imagine how much regret I would have experienced had I not set my agenda aside to be there for Diane.
Life moves pretty fast. If you're not careful, you can get so preoccupied with work, school, to-do lists, technology, and the latest trends you miss the opportunities God has for you to serve and make a difference with your life.
What does it mean to serve others? Serving can be making a meal for a loved one who is struggling or visiting them in the hospital. Helping your spouse with chores around the house and listening about their day. It can be volunteering at your church or in your community. Or it can be helping a co-worker with a project they've been assigned.
Don't get so distracted in life you miss out on serving with your life. Slow down and listen for your Heavenly Father's leading. You never know the difference it can make in someone's life - including yours.
