God's Treasure Map

Find the greatest treasure text

In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3 (NLT)

I grew up loving adventure movies. Pirate movies were always my favorite. Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Blackbeard the Pirate were my heroes. I was the kid who spent summers dressing up as a pirate and digging for gold in my backyard (and sometimes my neighbor’s yard). I wore a round eye patch and a long black hat and spoke in lingo only my fellow pirates could understand (“Ahoy, Mateys!”). The back deck was my pirate ship, and my favorite tree was my lookout. Our fence at the end of the property line was the shore.

I scoured the yard for buried treasure with a shovel and a bucket like our house was built on a goldmine. My parents used to get pretty irritated with me about the holes I created while looking for hidden treasure, but they were good sports about it because they loved the fact that I was using my imagination.

Now, as an adult, I no longer spend my summers dreaming up pirate raids and treasure chests filled with booty. But I still probe for treasure. You see, God’s Word is a treasure chest in itself. The Bible is filled with nuggets of hidden wisdom just waiting to be unearthed.

These days, instead of digging holes in my backyard, I sit in my favorite chair on my front porch and study God’s Word each morning, praying that He’ll reveal nuggets of golden truth. Every day, I ask Him to help me locate the treasure and understand its value.

When we read the Bible, adventure lies around every turn. The joy comes in the hunt. In John 10:10, Jesus says, “…My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” The more I probe the Bible for truth, the more I realize that Jesus is inviting us into a life of exciting exploration. Life on earth was never meant to be boring; it was always meant to be a great adventure, and the Bible is our treasure map.

The more we study and follow the map, the closer we get to our greatest treasure, Jesus. And, the closer we get to Jesus, the more we understand our purpose in life. Friends, there is no greater adventure than living in the bounty of God’s riches.

I’m ready to set sail! Are you with me?

DIG DEEPER:

  1. What’s one nugget of hidden treasure you’ve discovered recently while reading your Bible? How can you apply this treasure to your life?
  2. What’s one way you can commit to God’s great adventure for your life this week?
