Finding the Sweet Spot

"How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Heaven's Armies.  I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord.  With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God."  -Psalm 84:1-2 (NLT)

Recently, I have been hearing the phrase "finding the sweet spot." It seems this phrase originated from sports, the spot on a club, racket, bat, etc., where a ball is most effectively hit to deliver the greatest results.  I have also heard people use this phrase to indicate that they have found a good location to be, a peaceful frame of mind, or a place of comfort.  My wife and my daughters often use this phrase to signal that they have located the fudge shop.

As we look at Psalm 84, we can see that the Psalmist is longing to find the sweet spot with God.  Notice the depth of the writer's desire to be in God's presence.  He declares that his whole being, body, and soul is craving God's presence.  He states that he is to the point of fainting because his desire to enter the courts of the Lord is so great.  It is being in this sweet spot with God that causes the writer to shout for joy to the living God.

I recently found myself in that sweet spot with God.  I was driving and listening to some of the classic hymns that I recalled listening to when I was a child.  The simple melodies of bluegrass music sung in the traditional mountain harmonies took me back to my childlike faith, resting in the sweetness and goodness of Jesus.  It was a very precious time with Jesus then and the sweet innocence of simple faith.  I find myself just as the Psalmist longing for those sweet, beautiful times with Jesus.

Talk it Over

  • When was the last time that you found your sweet spot with God?
  • Take a few minutes today and identify what brings you into that sweet spot with God.
  • Identify some of the barriers that keep you from that sweet spot.
  • If you are feeling overwhelmed and burdened by work, schedule and everyday living; think of ways that you can find your sweet spot this week.
