Commit to take action text

"Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture.” Luke 8:6 (NLT)

When I was in elementary school, my teacher did a science experiment with our class. We took two plants and placed them by the window of our classroom. One plant we watered, the other plant we didn’t. After a few days, we discovered the plant that received sun and water was doing well. However, the plant that received sun but no water was dying. It didn’t take long for us to learn this truth: All plants need water.

Just like plants need sun, soil and water to grow, we as Christians need certain nutrients and enrichment's to grow spiritually. We need to fellowship with other believers, spend time in God’s Word and stay connected to God through prayer to keep the soils of our hearts rooted in His truth.

In Luke 8:13 Jesus says, “The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.”

One obstacle to spiritual growth is superficial commitment. If you want to grow in your relationship with God, you must genuinely commit to growing. It’s not enough to want to grow, you must take action in order to grow.

To cultivate deep roots like Jesus was talking about, you need to spend time reading the Bible and putting Scripture into practice. Over time, this will give your soul the nutrients it needs to develop a strong faith. And eventually, what’s rooted underground will bloom into something beautiful.

DIGGING DEEPER:

  1. What’s keeping you from making a deeper commitment to Christ?
  2. What can you do this week to water your spiritual soil?
