Prayers for Job Loss

As Believers, we know that our lasting treasure is in Heaven. However, for most of us, there is also the daily reality of needing to work to provide for ourselves and for our families. While working is a part of God’s good design, we see in Genesis, after the Fall, that work would become a burdensome necessity, more than a joy. In some seasons, we feel this as a heavier burden than others. Are you in a season of unemployment or underemployment? Are you fighting against fear, worrying about how you will make ends meet, or providing for your family? Take heart. While we live in a fallen world, God also promises to care and provide for us. In Matthew 6, Jesus illustrates that just as God meticulously cares for the birds and carefully clothes the lilies, we can trust God to provide for us. He loves us so much more than the birds or lilies. To help you foster that trust in God amidst the uncertainty you may be walking through today, we have provided some verses and prayers for you to meditate on.

Father, I know that my contentment and peace don’t come from my financial stability but from being rooted in Christ. However, in my humanness, I still struggle with fear and frustration in times of need. Lord, on the more challenging days, I need your help to remember that this is just a season and that you will sustain me through it with your strength.

I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

 - Philippians 4:12-13

Father, bless me with your peace in this season of leanness as I focus on you instead of my worries. It’s hard to trust you when I’m so overwhelmed by my practical needs. I know you are aware of my needs, God. Echoing the man who said, ‘Lord, I believe, help me in my unbelief,

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

 - Isaiah 26:3

Lord, I come to you expectantly today, knowing that you are a God who provides abundantly. As I am in a season of need, I ask that you place supportive people around me and that I would have the humility to accept your good gifts through them. I also ask that you bring me into a season of abundance and help me be a good steward of what you bless me with. Then may I overflow with generosity to those around me who are in need.

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.

 - 2 Corinthians 9:8

Father, I need your help in these times when I feel especially lost and confused. As I’m watching the bills pile up, I’m struggling to know if I’m headed in the right direction. I’m overwhelmed. Am I missing something, Lord? I need your comfort today that as I seek you, you will get me where I need to be. Give me your wisdom today and help me trust your sovereignty to care for my family and me.

 - Psalm 32:8

Lord, please bless me with your peace today - a genuine, lasting peace. I know that my peace and joy do not depend upon my circumstances, but I struggle to live that out. Holy Spirit, come in and help me experience gospel-focused peace that is unshakeable even in these uncertain times.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

 - John 14:27

Holy Father, I know you tell me to wait patiently and not fear. Still, I feel my anxiety growing as this waiting season stretches on. Help me see and believe you are blessing me with something material possessions and financial stability can never bring me; a growing dependence on you. Help me abide in you while I wait and trust the work you’re doing in and for me.

Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

 - Psalm 27:14

Father, I know that you are not a vindictive God who delights in taking things from your children. But sometimes, when I see others who are prospering, I struggle with feeling like you don’t hear or care for me in my struggles. Give me eyes to see how you are blessing me even during this trying time and to have the strength to keep asking for your financial provision. I know you hear me and love me dearly.

So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

 - Matthew 7:11

Lord, for the times I feel uncared for by you, help me look to the cross to remember your deep love for me. You sent your Son to die in my place so that I may live with you in your Kingdom forever. Help me to experience such joy in that truth today and peace. If you paid for my eternal freedom with your son’s blood, I could trust that you would provide for all my other needs.

Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?

I am in awe that you, the Creator of the universe and everything in it, care for me. May that truth still my anxious heart today as I surrender my daily concerns to you, Heavenly Father. I ask that you surprise me by specifically encouraging or providing for me in the way I need today.
