Cynthia Geary was intrigued when she was approached about taking the lead role in a new Great American Pure Flix series called “Going Home.”

Creator Dan Merchant shares that this is “kind of a unique medical show, where the nurses are not trying to save the patient; we’re working through the physical comfort, the spiritual needs, and the emotional needs of a patient.” He also told Life Today the show hopes to get people to think about living, “Are we living as we’re supposed to be living? Are we doing what God has for us? Are our relationships where they need to be?”

Cynthia explains that, as an actress, in order to help her get a clear picture of what hospice offers, Dan “set up a meeting for me to go in and meet the nurses at Hospice of Spokane and they were so generous with their time and their stories, and telling me what their day is like.”

In Going Home, Cynthia is the skilled lead hospice nurse Charley Copeland.

One takeaway from the show? “What we’re saying is that you don’t need to be afraid of death. And death is a part of life. And there is a beauty to it.” She admires the show’s producers and writers. “They have brilliantly woven in just a myriad of topics,“ such as foster care, adoption, work obsession, family estrangement, and even the story of a writer who is facing eternity – expressing concern and regret about the gruesome horror novels she’s written.

The show clearly offers topics that will hopefully make people who are not facing death consider the life that they’re living now, and what their own legacy might be.

There is a faith thread running through Going Home, with many elements that are familiar to Christians, but the show focuses more on situations and human emotions that may require the need for compassion, forgiveness, or hope.

But God does get significant placement. At the end of each show, nurse Charley sits down and has an open chat with God. “As an actress, it’s so cool to do these monologues every week…with God.” For Charley, “God to her is, he’s her buddy. And she talks to him like a confidant and a dear friend – and there’s not a lot of pomp & circumstance around it. She speaks, just talking to her friend and relating her day and her struggles and her goals. And I think it’s really beautiful.”

Editor's note: Jesus makes it clear that our spirits live on after physical death. The decision about eternity we make in life is indelible as we live on forever, somewhere. Scripture references: John 3:16, John 10:28-30, John 14:6, 2 Corinthians 5:1
