As students across America took part in See You at the Pole (SYATP) events this week, one gathering in San Diego had very special meaning to a school and one student in particular.
For 13-year-old Taylor Harris, the event was super special. A project envisioned and eventually funded by Taylor herself was dedicated at her school, Rock Academy in San Diego. Two years back, Taylor noticed, “We pledge to the flag each morning, but there wasn’t a flagpole.” Taylor felt led to donate a permanent flagpole and flag to her school. And she did it!
When See You At The Pole took place nationally on Wednesday, September 23rd, the new Rock Academy school pole was dedicated to God. Because San Diego is a military community, Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado dispatched a 4-person flag detail to render the first honors. Rock Church Pastor, Miles McPherson, recognized Taylor for her efforts and lead the invocation and devotional time.
So how did Taylor fund the project? She sold Girl Scout cookies, lots of them - 2,448 boxes - and made it a project for her Girl Scouts Silver Award. That’s the highest award an eighth grader can earn.
“I knew it was something God could do through me.” In our podcast below, hear how Taylor organized her sales and learn what scripture encouraged her to keep going until she crossed the financial finish line.
