(by Billie Wright) - What started as a crowd-funded project has grown into a world-wide phenomenon. The Chosen held its Season 4 premiere in Los Angeles in early January. The anticipation of the new season has grown since last season's final episode was released in late 2022.
The Chosen is a historical drama set around the life of Jesus, portrayed by Jonathan Roumie. The storyline will pick up where it left off, during the final episode of last season, as Jesus walks on water. New episodes will continue to follow His life, set during the Roman oppression in the first-century in Israel.
The Chosen is independently written, produced, and directed by Dallas Jenkins. He says, "Every time we've dipped our toes in the theatrical waters, viewers have overwhelmingly told us they want more."
The series had more than 300 million views in the first 16 episodes alone and doubling that number since. It is on track to become the most translated series in history. The first three seasons will be available in 50 languages with subtitles in more than 600. It's available to view in 175 countries.
The planned seven-season show was filmed, most recently, at locations in Texas and Utah. Each season using the aid of extras with season 3 utilizing 12,000 people. Extras provided their own costumes and transportation costs.
The two-week theater run starts February 1, 2024 with the first three episodes. The next three will show beginning February 15, with the final two in theaters February 29, all through Fathom Events. The show will also get time in theaters in other countries including Poland, Australia, and the UK.
In prior seasons, it was available to stream on Netflix, Peacock, and Amazon Prime as well as showing each week on The CW. The announcement of where to view season 4 after its theatrical run has yet to be made but will stream across TV and mobile apps, cable and broadcast television.
