For the past 40 years, Cindy has served alongside her husband Rick Godwin, the senior pastor at Summit Church, in the San Antonio area.
Running a church was not what they had planned for their lives, but after seeing a strong calling for a church that promotes acceptance, inclusivity, and an open-minded environment, they took a leap of faith.
After having a negative experience in a previous congregation, they were adamant to not be involved in launching or leading a church of their own.
“I mean here we'd been all this time going, ‘we don't like church. We don't want to be part of church’, and just laughed about it for a while,” she said.
But they believe that God is always in charge and accepted that in obedience to Him.
Uprooting their lives from Georgia to Texas nearly four decades ago, Summit Church has welcomed many from all over the world and has also been a foundation that built one of the largest Christian women’s conferences in the country.
Cindy says unapologetically that the idea came to her in an unlikely place.
“So, I was in the shower, and I heard the word chosen, and then I immediately saw the scripture in Ephesians 1:4 which amplified for, I actually chose you,” she says.
Every year women are greeted with an unwavering acceptance and the royal treatment. From a pink carpet, chocolate tastings, shopping and more, women feel magic in the air.
The first conference took place in 2004 with more than 250 people in attendance making every year after bigger than the last.
Since then, the conference hosts thousands of women and brings out top entertainment and guest speakers including Christine Caine, Lisa Harper, and more. The conference has even hosted a wedding and several baby showers.
The event also serves as a philanthropic night. The Chosen Foundation has given over $250,000 to several ministries close to home and as far as Uganda.
“You will walk out filled up; you will walk out full of healing, love, and hope,” Godwin says.
Cindy and Rick are now in their golden wedding anniversary of 50 years and their love is still going strong and says the secret is—there are no secrets.
“God knows what you need,” she adds.
When Cindy is not spending time planning their next conference or working alongside her husband, she says the best way to unwind is through her family…and kitchen.
Cindy says the best therapy for her is baking and has even shared her own famous recipes for you to try out.
