At 5:00 AM bombs began falling on Kharkiv

It was February 24, 2022, the day that Russia invaded Ukraine.  "There were explosions all around the city", remembers Pastor Ilia Gerasim. "From the very beginning of the war people lost their jobs, businesses were stopped.”

The very next day Pastor Gerasim's congregation began cooking hot meals for traumatized residents. Holy Trinity Church quickly became a full-scale distribution center.

The church gave out over 300,000 bags of food before running out of supplies. That’s when Samaritan’s Purse stepped in with more food and volunteers.

“I think without what the churches have been doing, the crisis that has been going on would be significantly worse”, said Physician’s Assistant and volunteer, Will Cable.  “Christ has called us to sacrifice. The biggest sacrifice is to go where people are and to love on them, and to serve them.”

Pastor Gerasim believes he’s watching a miracle.  “There is a great awakening in Ukraine right now. God turns all evil into good. People are turning to God now. Where there is trouble, where there is pain, there is divine love and care. God is here."
