New Song Feature: "Desperate" Jamie MacDonald

Jamie MacDonald's introduction to radio listeners comes in the form of “Desperate,” her debut single. The song is a passionate plea for heaven to intervene. Out of options and low on hope, the new artist lends her soaring Gospel-tinged range to the original she wrote with Jonathan Gamble and Jordan Sapp.

“The lyrics for ‘Desperate’ were inspired by several ongoing life situations that were weighing heavy on our hearts but completely out of our control. Writing this with Jonathan and Jordan was truly a gift because both have become like brothers to me, and it was a safe space to share some really deep struggles that day, which led to the completion of this song,” MacDonald offers. “Since writing it, this song has been my anthem when I haven’t had the words to pray through some of those same situations I’m still walking out. I truly hope it becomes a tool for you as well.”

MacDonald, who was born in Nashville but grew up in Michigan, explains the song runs parallel to the biblical story of Jacob, where he wrestled with God until he experienced breakthrough — a sentiment the newcomer can relate to.

Prior to signing a record deal, the gifted singer-songwriter released two albums independently. Her music has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network and on a pivotal episode of NBC’s “The Rookie,” as well as on a variety of commercials and promotional spots. Meanwhile, her personal story — one riddled with insecurity, unhealthy coping mechanisms and relational strain — is just as powerful as her voice.

Many of her songs come from her own struggles and from several years spent working in prison ministry. With every lyric she writes, the faces of those women — still behind bars — remain a fixture in the back of her mind.

With an undeniably soulful tone, a remarkable testimony and a heartfelt message, MacDonald is poised to be Christian music’s next rising act. She’ll open for Brandon Heath on tour later this month.
