The aggressive pop jam, crafted by the group’s Chris Cron (lead vocals) and Ben Thompson (production), has already ascended to the top of the Billboard Christian Hot AC chart, granting All Creatures their first No. 1 hit. The song itself is a subtle nod to how the band began — in the most unexpected of ways.
Cron was living on the West Coast performing as the lead singer of Mêlée, a mainstream rock band signed to Warner Bros. Records. When Mêlée broke up, Cron and his wife moved to Tennessee, where he embarked on a solo career that was full of setbacks.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Thompson was honing his production skills in what felt like complete isolation in his hometown of Greensboro, N.C. However, after he won a contest, which earned him the opportunity to remix Switchfoot's “Afterlife,” doors started opening for Thompson, who’s known in the remix world as Neon Feather. Under this moniker, he quickly became one of the most sought-after remixers in Christian music. Although he was reimagining songs for TobyMac, Francesca Battistelli and We Are Messengers, among other high-profile acts, his solo career continued to stall.
A co-write brought Cron and Thompson together in a writer’s room, and their creative connection was instant. After garnering millions of streams on a handful of initial songs they wrote together, the two young fathers decided to make their partnership official, forming All Creatures.
The pair poured all their prior experience and present youthful exuberance into their first single, “[wonder working],” and they’ve since even served up an official remix of the song helmed by none other than Neon Feather.
“My new band, All Creatures, released our first single back in July with zero expectations. Two friends, making music together. Feels like we’re 16 and back in the garage,” Cron shared on Instagram shortly after “[wonder working]” shot to the top of the charts. “To have our first song go to No. 1 in a matter of a few months is mind-blowing. I have no idea what God is doing, but I’m in for the ride.”
