New Song Feature: "Do it Again" Steven Curtis Chapman

Steven Curtis Chapman’s latest single, “Do It Again,” was inspired by the late author and theologian G.K. Chesterton, who wrote, “Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, ‘Do it again’… It is possible that God says every morning, ‘Do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”

The bouncy pop offering uses the vivid imagery of certainties in nature to illuminate God’s unchanging love for His children. “I love how it makes me think about this idea that God never gets tired of doing over and over again the things that show us His love, His grace and His goodness,” Chapman says of the quote’s impact on his own life and the subsequent genesis of his new song. “Hope it’s encouraging to you!”

The 50-time chart-topper crafted the smile-inducing, upbeat recording with his sons, Caleb and Will Franklin, who are both artists in their own right. Caleb is the lead singer and primary lyricist for alternative rock outfit Colony House, while his brother, Will Franklin, serves as the band’s dynamic drummer. Both sonically and lyrically, “Do It Again” evokes as much nostalgia and childlike wonder as it does the perpetual reminder that God’s mercies are new every morning. Thus, it feels fitting that Chapman penned it with his own kids.

“Do It Again” is but a feather in a year filled with numerous crowning achievements for the icon, who earned his 60th GMA Dove Award and became the first Contemporary Christian Music artist to ever be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. Concluding 2024 on a festive note, Chapman recently released an original Christmas duet, “Broken Dreams,” with Hillary Scott. The Kentucky native will embark on a 10-city acoustic Christmas tour beginning Dec. 4.
