You probably know Stephen McWhirter’s hit song, “Come Jesus Come,” but do you know the man behind the music?
McWhirter has quite a story to tell, and during a recent visit to the K-LOVE Studios, the singer/songwriter shared a powerful conversation with Amy and Carlos of the K-LOVE Morning Show that is sure to strengthen your faith.
“I was an evangelist’s son, I grew up in church camp, and I would see my dad get up and preach about Jesus,” McWhirter said of his childhood. “Then, behind closed doors, I would see a totally different person and literally see him go out and preach and then physically abuse my mom at home. And I said, ‘You know what? If God's real, I don't want anything to do with him.’”
By the age of 17, McWhirter was addicted to drugs, his life heading down a path many don’t return from. One day, McWhirter was given a book called “The Case for Christ,” and, surprisingly, by his own admission, he accepted it.
Then, one night, as the book was sharing space with drugs on a side table, McWhirter’s life changed forever.
“We begin to have this internal dialogue, me and the Lord,” McWhirter recalled. “He's like, ‘I'm real. I'm good. I have a purpose for your life. What are you going to do?’ And I just remember being like, ‘God, I want to give you my life. I want to quit all this addiction, all this darkness, all this depression, all this anger I've known for so long. God, I want to, but I can't.’
“I'd been in addiction for over 11 years at this point. And so, I just was being honest. Like, ‘God, I want to but there's no way.’ But then in a thought more powerful than words, the Holy Spirit spoke something into me that changed me for the rest of my life. He was like, ‘Steven, you won't do it. I'll do it.’”
