People love looking at themselves. We have this device called an iPhone or an Android. It is a smartphone. One of the great features on that phone is a camera. I see people that will take their phone out, turn on their camera, look at themselves, try to fix something, try to adjust something. They're very interested in how they look.
The Bible reminds us that we can look into a mirror. Found in the book of James or in Proverbs 27:19, the Bible says, As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person. We can look at a smooth glass lake and see our reflection in the water, and we see what's on the outside. The Bible says that the heart reflects what's on the inside. Just as the water gives that clear reflection, our heart gives a reflection of what's on the inside.
The Importance of Heart Condition
We spend a lot of time trying to fix the outside so that people would like us. Maybe people would admire us and not be afraid of us or be scared. On the inside, do we spend that time making the heart right, so that it is reflective of our Savior? Is it reflective of the Word of God?
You know when pressures come, what's on the inside comes out. I once heard an illustration about what comes out when you squeeze a lemon. Well, we would think lemon juice would normally come out because on the outside it looks like a lemon. What if we took that lemon and we changed what was on the inside?
Then when the pressure comes and that lemon is squeezed so tightly, what's going to come out is actually what you put in it. So is our heart. We may look great on the outside. We may be dressed well. We may have everything just perfect. But then when life's pressures begin to squeeze us, what's actually going to come out is what's in the heart, what's on the inside.
Questions for Heart Examination
This verse challenges us to always look on the inside and ask, what is my heart saying? What is my heart reflecting? Is my heart reflecting pride or humility? Is my heart reflecting bitterness or grace? Is my heart reflecting fear? Or is my heart reflecting faith? God cares more about our inside than He does our outside.
He cares more about the condition of our heart. The true living out. In Proverbs the heart is more than just an emotion. The heart is our attitudes. It's our beliefs. It's the character of who we are. God really is interested in our character more than just our comfort.
The True Mirror
The Bible says in our Verse of the Day in Proverbs 27:19 that just like our face is reflected in the water, so our heart is a reflection of our character, a reflection of who we are. Let me ask you, what is your heart reflecting today? Ask God to shape your heart, to reflect His love, His truth, and His character.
While you may pull out that phone and turn on the camera to look at yourself, but we can always pull out the Word of God and look deep into our heart.
