Kindra Ponzio talks with Claire Johnson, Executive Director of GOTR Northstate. Johnson talks about an afterschool program for girls 3rd grade to 8th grade that is not just a running program but a mentoring and self awareness program. Although they train to complete a 5K at the end of the season, there is a specific curriculum that encourages the girls to build relationships. They use mentor coaches to help girls learn to communicate, build self-esteem, discipline, build friendships and loyalty. Johnson says the program is great for girls even if they are not interested in running, encouraging just moving. The program is also adaptable for girls with special needs.
